Svala, meaning swallow in Icelandic, was founded by Helga Douglas, with the objective to create beautiful, stylish pieces that are animal-friendly and produced sustainably. Svala began as a line of lingerie, sleepwear and loungewear made in Los Angeles with fabrics such as organic cotton and reclaimed factory surplus lace. Now they have expanded to include luxury, vegan, handcrafted handbags.
Their products are made with premium, innovative, animal-friendly, PVC-free fabrics such as luxurious, Italian PU (polyurethane), Pinatex® (made from pineapple leaf fiber) and cork. Each Svala handbag is lined with fabric made with organic cotton and recycled polyester made with plastic bottles. Svala is a PETA approved brand as well as a Fur Free Retailer.
Svala is inspired by Helga’s love of animals and nature, her affinity for the relaxed, colorful feel of Sydney and LA and the simplicity of Scandinavian design.
How did you come up with the idea of creating Svala?
I originally created Svala as I am very interested in sustainable, animal-friendly fashion. I started writing for a few publications about this topic and ended up doing a lot of research. I was always searching for beautiful, well-made vegan handbags and was unable to find exactly what I was looking for. So I decided to create my own brand.
Svala means swallow in Icelandic and this bird is a symbol of love, loyalty, freedom and hope in many cultures.
Svala was created for all women who are looking for beautiful, functional handbags. We aim to create timeless, stylishdesigns that are seasonless and appeal to all women – not only those looking for leather alternatives.
